Thomas Lee Ewing, 68, of Pensacola, Florida passed away on January 2, 2019. He is preceded in death by his parents Peter Thomas Ewing, Jr. and Glenna Hartless Ewing; and his brothers Donald Dart and Paul Ewing. He leaves behind his wife Catherine McConnell and daughter Elizabeth McConnell.
Thomas Ewing graduated from Escambia High School, and earned his bachelors and Masters degrees at the University of West Florida. He directed middle school band for 30 years, his first year in DeFuniak Springs, and the ensuing 29 years at Bellview Middle School, where he developed an award-winning band program, consistently earning top ratings at District Music Performance Assessments and Solo and Ensemble events, even being selected to perform at the prestigious University of Southern Mississippi 1984 Southern Directors Conference. Many of his band students have become leading band directors in the state and country as well as professional musicians in key positions in major symphonies.
Thomas Ewing also served as District Chairman for the Florida Band Association, as well as president of the Phi Beta Mu honorary band directors fraternity. He was a life member of the Florida Bandmasters Association.
In his retirement, Tom was a sought after band adjudicator for annual Solo and Ensemble events across northern Florida, and he enjoyed mentoring younger band directors.
Tom was a devoted husband and father, and enjoyed cooking, gardening, and spending time with his wife and daughter.
The family will receive friends for visitation from 1-2:00pm Saturday, January 5th at Pensacola Memorial Gardens Funeral Home with funeral to follow at 2:00pm.

    So sorry to hear of Tom’s death. He was still so young. I am Joan Bennett Dart, wife of Donald Dart. Don was the oldest brother of Tom. Don died at an early age. My condolences to Tom’s wife and daughter at their loss from all the Dart family. What a talented ,man Tom was and how proud his Mother was of his accomplishments. May he Rest In Peace.     I am so sorry to hear of Tom’s passing. I taught orchestra at Bellview Middle in the early years of my teaching career when Tom was there before he retired. Cathy, his wife was an orchestra colleague of mine and a good friend. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, daughter,and family.Many students would tell me about Mr. Ewing being very strict, but he taught them to love music. He will be missed.
