James Helms • September 29, 2018

James W. Helms, age 79, went to his Eternal Home on September 29, 2018. He was known for his sweet smile, his positive attitude and most of all for his love for God.

James is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara. They would be celebrating 33 years of marriage on October 12th. As much as Barbara loved him, when there was no cure on this earth for James, she told him it was okay to go be with Jesus. From that point on, he was calling out to Jesus to come get him. He was surrounded by his loving wife and special friends as he left this world to be with his Heavenly Father. He was anxious to see his son, Butch, and many other family members and friends who preceded him in death.

He was born in Florala, AL on February 20, 1939 to James Ollie and Susie Mae Helms. His mother referred to him as “Sweet Boy” being the baby of the family with six sisters: Ruby Hazel Moss, Glenda Revels, Erma Doria (Dottie) Carter, Quinette (Judy) Brill, all deceased. James has one surviving sister, Mina Sue Hutto (Fred). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and other family members including his special adopted son, Ronnie Anthony who treated him like a father. He will be so missed by Gracie and Abbie as well.

James had a burden for lost souls and would often witness to waitstaff, nurses, doctors saying: “I know when I die, I’ll be in Heaven. Will I see you there? I’m sure James was greeted in Heaven by “Well done good and faithful servant”.

He proudly served 20 years in the United States Air Force

A visitation and service will be held at Pensacola Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Thursday, October 4, 2018 from 9:30am until the service begins at 10:30am with Pastor Fred Stallworth officiating.

Donations in his name can be made to Waterfront Missions.

  13. Diane Schartz says:

That smile was always with James! He was such a kind man. I will never forget when we were working with the church in the summer of 2005, my daughter celebrated her 13th birthday. She was a little sad because we were away from family and friends, but James just made her day when he wished her a happy birthday and blessed her with a cash birthday present. He was so sensitive to the needs of other people. The love of Jesus radiated in his life. It is great to know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he will be there when the rest of us get to heaven with that big smile on his face!
